The _ is an underscore that is often used to include both the masculine , feminine and third genders, for example in job titles.

In the course of the last few years, there have been repeated discussions about how best to express that all genders can be meant by a word (for example, a job title). Here, among other things, the _ (underscore) has become established. A classic example of its use is Bäcker_innen (bakers).

Contrary to popular belief, the underscore not only refers to the male and female gender, but also includes the so-called "third gender". In short: with its help, no one should feel disadvantaged.

Due to the current discussions around Gender and the German language, it can be assumed that the _ will continue to play an important role in the future and will probably become even more popular and well-known.

A special milestone in this context was also the fact that job advertisements now also use the abbreviations "m/ w/ d" to express that all genders are welcome in the respective company.

The further spread of the underline is also a caesura that should not be underestimated with regard to the equality of all genders. After all, developments in the past have already shown that language (or in this case: writing) often responds to increased tolerance in society. Therefore, the underscore, the meaning of which is now taught in German lessons at schools, is also a positive sign for all those who have long wished for more equality - regardless of whether they belong to the LGBTQ community or not.
