After the first episode on TVnow, it was already clear to many viewers: at "Prince Charming"is a dating show that could revolutionise German television. For the first time, an attractive single man set out to find the love of his life. However, what distinguishes "Gay Bachelor" from other formats of this kind: Nicolas Puschmann is the first Gay Bachelor.
Otherwise, the Prince is largely oriented towards the classic Bachelor. That means: 20 candidates try to win the heart of the prince. Among other things, exciting individual and group dates are on the agenda. So anyone who has already followed the searches of Paul Janke, Sebastian Pannek and (most recently) Sebastian Preuss will quickly recognise similarities.
But what actually makes the special flair of the programme? What is different? And how does the search for Mr. Right turn out? (If you don't want to find out too much here, you should stop reading before the last paragraph! There might be a spoiler here!)
Basic similarities and differences to "The Bachelor
If only because of the fact that "Gay Bachelor" is aimed at a completely different target group, it would be wrong not to regard this show as an independent format. Nevertheless, parallels cannot be dismissed out of hand.
On the Gay Bachelor, too, a special ceremony plays an important role when it comes to screening out candidates. The corresponding night or evening is not called "Night of the Roses", but - quite classically - "Gentlemen Night".
Ties are then distributed here instead of roses. Those who get one are allowed to stay. Those who have to leave later in the programme have to hand in their ties in return. It is therefore self-explanatory why the sentence "Would you like to accept this rose?" on "Prince Charming" was changed to "Would you like to keep your tie on?
However, Nicolas Puschmann also finds himself in beautiful places on earth. Here he can search - together with the candidates - for the great love. Group and individual dates provide plenty of excitement.
Last but not least, of course, the latter also promotes itself through the reunion show. This not only shows how the individual candidates react to the prince afterwards, but also whether he and his chosen one are still a couple.
The start of "Gay Bachelor" on VOX has been very successful. Already during the broadcast via the premium access of TVnow, a fan community quickly formed that could not wait until the new episode started.
The "secret of success"? A mix of an exciting partner search and characters that couldn't be more different. No matter whether shy, extremely adorable or extroverted: here, every prince in search of his suitable counterpart would have got his money's worth!
Moreover, according to many posts on the internet, the viewers found the show much funnier than the classic Bachelor. The overall concept was captivating from the very first minute... and made viewers want to find out even more about the boys.
Especially interesting: unlike other protagonists from shows of this kind, Prince Nicolas Puschmann never had to defend himself against a real shitstorm. Show after show, he developed into a real audience favourite.
Sometimes - despite his open-mindedness - he seemed like a true pole of calm between all his admirers, who could certainly join in the celebrations but also had no problem showing his thoughtful side.
"Gay Bachelor" and the Grimme Prize
Shortly after the release of "Prince Charming" it became known that the format was actually nominated for the Grimme Prize! This was a small phenomenon in many respects. After all, there had never been a dating show before that actually managed to be awarded this prize.
Great proof that it was obviously time to give a slot to a man in search of his male "better half".
Caution! If you don't want to know whether Nicolas Puschmann will be the first Gay Bachelor to find his treasure, you should stop reading EXACTLY HERE!
Curious? All right!
After the aspirants Dominic Smith, Andreas Kürner and Aaron Königs one by one, hand over their ties, a romantic finale with Lars Tönsfeuerborn nothing more stands in the way. The podcaster from Düsseldorf thus manages to conquer the prince's heart. Not directly, sometimes in a roundabout way, but still obviously very effective.
And: apparently Nicolas and Lars do not seem to be under the "curse of the dating shows", which has already befallen many other couples. The two of them are - as is also clear from the reunion show - still together. Today they live together in Düsseldorf... and are probably still happy that they decided to embark on this exciting adventure (and for each other, of course) back then.
